I recently went out and blew my monthly gadget budget on the new iPod touch. Initially when I walked into the store, the plan was just to “have a look” at the new iPod. However, after holding it in my hands and quickly comparing it to my 4 year old, dying, iPod mini(thats right I still own a mini) the decision practically made itself. You can probably read peoples reviews of it on a host of other sites (Engadget touch review), but that still does not stop me from having my say
While it is thin (0.31 inches thick) and lightweight (120 grams), the screen comes in at 3.5 inches with a 480 X 320 px resolution. The multi-touch technology they use is pretty amazing, and is extremely intuitive, it takes just a few seconds before you should have things figured out, even the on-screen keyboard is pretty accurate with only a few mis-hits on my first day.
The other cool thing they are using is the accelerometer, which basically knows when you rotate the iPod from landscape mode to portrait mode and changes the layout of video and sites accordingly. If you are listening to music it changes between song list and album art view. While at the moment Apple are just using the accelerometer to detect the position of the iPod, there are already people out there who have hacked it for some fun applications
Check out the video below to see some of the things they have managed to do with the accelerometer
The only few complaints I have with the touch is that the memory is too low (8 or 16 GB only!) and there is no bluetooth. (There is also no way to add external applications, unless you want to hack your touch, and thats a story for another day)
In spite of these missing features I am still happy with my purchase, lets hope they don’t come out with some major hardware changes or a Gen 2 iPod touch soon
